TE = EXTERNAL EQUALIZER.

The thermostatic expansion valve controls the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator using a thermal sensing element to detect and transmit superheat. The valve opens or closes in response to the thermal element.

The thermostatic expansion valve maintains a constant superheat within the evaporator. Excessive superheat is not desirable but a small amount is necessary to prevent liquid refrigerant from leaving the evaporator. Excessive pressure drop in the refrigeration circuit can cause insufficient refrigerant supply to the evaporator by the valve. The use of a thermostatic expansion valve with an external equalizer compensates for the pressure drop across the evaporator. The external equalizer line is connected to the suction line after the sensing bulb of the expansion valve.
