R290 is propane as a refrigerant, replacing R22 and R502. It is a natural refrigerant suitable for use in a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning applications. Its use is increasing due to its low environmental impact and excellent thermodynamic performance, with a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and very low global warming potential (GWP). It is non-toxic and flammable, making it unsuitable for retrofitting existing systems using halocarbon refrigerants.
