Suction pressure regulators (crankcase pressure regulators) are installed in the suction line ahead of the compressor and protect it against overload during start-up, particularly after long periods of standstill or after defrost cycles (high pressure in the evaporator).

Crankcase pressure regulators are installed in the suction line after the evaporator. They are used to maintain a constant evaporating pressure and therefore a constant surface temperature on the evaporator. The adjustment can be set as required.

By regulating the suction line, the amount of refrigerant flowing is matched to the evaporator load, while at the same time protecting it against excessively low pressures (e.g. as freeze protection in water evaporators – water chillers). The regulator closes when the pressure in the evaporator falls below the set point.
