Siphoning in a mini pump installation occurs when a discharge pipe has a rise followed by a steep drop along the line. Any water below the tank level, under the effect of gravity, pulls the remaining water through the pump.

Siphoning can cause serious damage to a mini pump, as the pump may run dry for a period, resulting in premature wear, increased noise levels, and ultimately pump failure. Any mini pump can be prone to this problem.
